This week is National Inclusion Week 2023, a time when organisations unite. This year the theme is “Take Action, Make Impact.” In a world that’s evolving rapidly, the significance of inclusivity in the workplace cannot be overstated. This year’s theme serves as a clarion call to every individual and entity within an organisation to actively contribute to fostering a culture of inclusion. Let’s delve into why taking action is crucial and explore practical ways for companies to make a lasting impact.
Why Take Action?
- Diversity Breeds Innovation: In a globalised marketplace, diversity is not just a buzzword—it’s a key driver of innovation. Diverse teams bring together a variety of perspectives, experiences, and skills, fostering creativity and problem-solving. By taking intentional steps to promote inclusion, companies tap into a wellspring of innovation that can propel them ahead of the competition.
- Enhanced Employee Engagement: An inclusive workplace is one where every employee feels valued and heard. When individuals sense that their contributions matter, engagement levels soar. This heightened engagement translates to increased productivity, loyalty, and a positive company culture.
- Attracting and Retaining Top Talent: In today’s talent-driven market, attracting and retaining skilled professionals is a top priority. Companies that champion diversity and inclusion signal to potential employees that they are forward-thinking and committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive. This, in turn, becomes a powerful tool for talent acquisition and retention.
- Meeting Customer Expectations: With consumers becoming increasingly discerning, they gravitate towards brands that align with their values. Companies that embrace diversity and inclusion not only reflect societal expectations but also demonstrate a commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of a diverse customer base.

How to Take Action:
- Leadership Commitment: True change begins at the top. Leaders must vocalise their commitment to inclusion, integrating it into the organisation’s mission and values. This commitment should be evident in both words and actions, setting the tone for the entire workforce.
- Education and Training: Equip employees with the knowledge and skills needed to foster inclusivity. Regular training sessions on topics such as unconscious bias, cultural competence, and communication skills contribute significantly to building an inclusive workplace.
- Establish Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): ERGs provide a platform for employees to connect, share insights, and offer support. Encouraging the formation of ERGs is a practical way to empower employees and demonstrate an organisation’s commitment to diverse perspectives. It is important to ensure there is a communication loop to truly listen to ERG feedback.
- Review and Revise Policies: Evaluate existing policies and procedures to ensure they promote inclusivity. This includes recruitment processes, promotion criteria, and flexible work arrangements. Regularly assess and revise policies to adapt to the evolving needs of the workforce.
- Measure and Celebrate Progress: Implement metrics to measure the impact of inclusion initiatives. Regularly assess the organisation’s progress and celebrate milestones. Recognition reinforces positive behaviors and signals a genuine commitment to the cause.
